Loving your use of metacognition inside your “detours”. let's take a detour from our detour to talk about sampling bias to talk more about sampling bias.

I’d argue that positioning is an aspect of “luck “ that gets almost no attention. Bill Gates is smart and capable but his cumulative positioning made it more probable for him to succeed. It put him where he could get opportunities and build on that.

There's so much to gleam from this post on sampling bias. Appreciate it. Yes, I don't pick up the phone to answer polls or whatsoever. Prefer face-to-face interactions and messages in the meantime. Thanks for the post!

Bias in how the human brain works. The only means of eliminating bias is brain death. Biases programmed by DNA begin collecting information while still in the womb. The collection process kicks into high gear after birth and the personality of the person is basically set before they even have the rational capacity to assess the information received. It's adaptable (especially in the face of catastrophe) but always tends to return to it's early state.

The best a person can do is to realize the relative lack of validity of the information their brain holds, stay as open minded as possible, and assess the validity of everything one thinks as assiduously as is reasonable. Those people demonizing bias just want you to exchange your biases for theirs.
